Stair Chair Service: When Stairs Make Transportation Difficult

Sometimes the biggest challenge is not the ride itself — it is the stairs leading in or out of the home.

Many homes and apartment buildings have staircases that make it difficult or unsafe for someone with limited mobility to leave the house. In these situations, stair chair service can help.

A stair chair allows our team to safely assist someone up or down a staircase so they can reach a wheelchair or stretcher transport vehicle waiting outside. Every staircase is different. Some are narrow, some have tight turns, and others are steep or curved. Because of this, each stair chair request needs to be reviewed ahead of time so our team can determine whether the staircase can be safely navigated.

In some situations, families only need help getting someone up or down the stairs and do not need transportation afterward. We can provide stair chair service as a stand-alone service as well. If you are requesting stair chair service only, please make sure to note that in the quote request.

We ask that all stair chair requests be submitted through our online quote form so our team can review the staircase details and determine whether the service can be provided safely.

It is important to know that stair chair service is only available for individuals who are able to transfer into the stair chair. Unfortunately, we are unable to bring a stretcher up or down stairs if the patient is non-transferable.

If the individual cannot transfer and must remain on a stretcher, we encourage you to contact your local fire department for assistance with safely moving them.
