Getting Home After a Hip Injury When Stairs Were Involved

A recent situation Skyline Transport assisted with is a good example of why families need to think beyond just the ride home when someone's mobility suddenly changes.

The individual had fallen and broken their hip. After being treated in the emergency room, they were discharged home but were now non-weight-bearing and expected to rely on a wheelchair for at least six weeks.

There was another challenge: they lived in a condo with stairs and no elevator.

Getting transportation home from the hospital was only part of the problem. Once they arrived at their condo, they still needed a safe way to get from the vehicle and into their residence without being able to navigate the stairs independently.

The family contacted Skyline Transport and explained the situation. We were able to coordinate wheelchair transportation from the hospital along with stair-chair assistance at the passenger's home.

But their transportation needs didn't end with the hospital discharge.

During the weeks that followed, the passenger also needed to attend orthopedic follow-up appointments while they remained non-weight-bearing and dependent on a wheelchair. The family continued to use Skyline Transport for those appointments, including the transportation and stair-chair assistance needed to safely leave and return to the condo.

Instead of trying to coordinate different companies for each part of the process, the family was able to work with one transportation provider that already understood the passenger's mobility needs, home accessibility challenges and transportation requirements.

One provider. One point of contact. A much easier and less stressful transportation process during an already difficult recovery.

Why This Matters When Planning a Hospital Discharge

A person's mobility after an injury, procedure or hospitalization may be very different from when they arrived.

And transportation needs often don't end with the ride home.

Before arranging transportation, consider the entire recovery period:

  • Can the passenger safely get into and out of a regular vehicle?

  • Can they bear weight or transfer independently?

  • Will they need a wheelchair after discharge?

  • Are there stairs at the home?

  • Is an elevator available?

  • Will they need transportation to follow-up appointments?

  • Will they need stair-chair assistance each time they leave or return home?

  • Are there additional mobility or accessibility needs the transportation provider should know about?

Getting someone home is sometimes just the first trip.

For someone recovering from an injury or procedure, having a transportation plan for follow-up appointments can make the weeks ahead much easier for both the passenger and their family.
