What to Expect During a Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Ride

If you've never used non-emergency medical transportation before, you might not know what to expect - and that uncertainty can add stress to an already full day. Understanding the process from start to finish can make the experience much smoother for both patients and their families.

Here's a complete walkthrough of what to expect when you schedule and use NEMT with Skyline Transport in the Tampa Bay area.

Before Your Ride: Preparation Tips

A little preparation goes a long way. Here's what to do before your pickup time:

•        Confirm your pickup time and any scheduling details the day before your trip

•        Have your appointment address, any relevant medical paperwork, and your insurance card ready

•        Prepare your mobility equipment - wheelchair, walker, cane - and have it accessible

•        Let your driver or the scheduling team know if your address has any special access instructions such as a gate code, building entrance, or elevator location

•        Arrange for any medications or items you'll need during your appointment

•        Be ready at your pickup location slightly before your scheduled time - drivers often arrive on time or a few minutes early

Driver Arrival: What Happens First

When your Skyline Transport driver arrives, here's what the process looks like:

For ambulatory clients: Your driver will come to your door and assist you to the vehicle. They'll provide physical support as needed - an arm to hold, assistance with steps, help with your walker or cane.

For wheelchair clients: Your driver will assist with positioning and boarding via the vehicle lift. Your wheelchair will be secured with approved tie-down restraints before the trip begins.

For stretcher clients: The transport crew will bring the stretcher to you, assist with the transfer, and ensure you are safely secured before transport.

For stair chair clients: Your crew will assess the staircase, seat you in the stair chair, and guide you safely to ground level before assisting you into the vehicle.

During the Ride

Once you're on board and secured, the focus shifts entirely to getting you to your destination safely and comfortably.

•        Vehicles are clean, climate-controlled, and maintained to safety standards

•        Your driver takes routes appropriate for your trip type and comfort

•        If you have questions or concerns during the ride, your driver is there to help

•        Drivers are trained to operate at a pace that prioritizes passenger comfort, especially for post-procedure and stretcher clients

Arrival at Your Appointment

When you arrive at your destination:

•        Your driver assists you from the vehicle to the entrance of your facility

•        For wheelchair and stretcher clients, full transfer assistance is provided

•        Your driver confirms the drop-off and provides any necessary contact information for your return trip

If your appointment is running long and you have a return trip scheduled, communicate with your driver or contact Skyline Transport so we can adjust timing accordingly.
