What Is Stair Chair Transportation and How Does It Work?

For many individuals with mobility challenges, the biggest barrier to getting to a medical appointment isn't the ride itself - it's the stairs. Whether it's a multi-story home without an elevator, an apartment building with only stairwell access, or a medical facility with limited ADA accommodations, stairs can make a standard NEMT pickup impossible without the right equipment.

Stair chair transportation is the solution. Here's how it works and when it's the right option.

What Is a Stair Chair?

A stair chair (also called a stair lift transport chair or evacuation chair) is a specialized device designed to safely move individuals up and down staircases when they cannot navigate stairs independently. The chair is operated by trained transport staff who guide it carefully along stair treads while keeping the passenger securely seated.

Stair chairs used in medical transport are different from the permanent stairlifts you might install in a home - they are portable, operated by a trained crew, and used specifically to assist with the boarding and exit process for NEMT trips.

Who Needs Stair Chair Transportation?

Stair chair service is appropriate for individuals who:

•        Live in a home, apartment, or facility with stairs and no elevator access

•        Cannot safely navigate stairs independently due to age, injury, or disability

•        Use a wheelchair or walker but need to descend or ascend stairs to reach the vehicle

•        Are recovering from surgery or injury and are not cleared to use stairs without assistance

•        Have balance or fall risk issues that make independent stair use unsafe

This service is often combined with wheelchair transportation - meaning the client uses the stair chair to navigate the stairs, then is transferred to a wheelchair-accessible vehicle for the ride.

How Does Stair Chair Transportation Work?

Here's what the process typically looks like with Skyline Transport:

•        Your driver and transport crew arrive at your location with the stair chair equipment

•        The crew assesses the staircase and safely seats the client in the stair chair

•        The client is guided up or down the stairs carefully and under full crew control

•        Once at ground level (or the appropriate floor), the client is assisted into the transport vehicle

•        Upon arrival at the destination, the process is reversed if stairs are present at the drop-off location

Safety is the top priority throughout. Trained transport staff manage every step of the process.

How to Schedule Stair Chair Transportation

When scheduling your NEMT trip, notify the provider or broker at the time of booking that stair chair assistance is needed. Provide:

•        Number of stairs and direction (up, down, or both)

•        Whether there is any railing available

•        Any other relevant details about the environment (narrow staircase, landing midway, etc.)

Giving this information in advance ensures the right equipment and crew are dispatched for your trip.
