What Is Post-Procedure Transportation After Medical Appointments?

You've scheduled your procedure. You've done the prep work. But have you figured out how you're getting home?
It's a detail that many patients overlook until the last minute - and some medical facilities won't proceed with a procedure if you can't demonstrate you have a safe ride home arranged. Post-procedure transportation is a critical part of your care plan, not an afterthought.
What Is Post-Procedure Transportation?
Post-procedure transportation is a type of NEMT service specifically designed to transport patients safely home - or to another care location - after an outpatient medical procedure, surgery, or appointment that leaves them temporarily unable to drive.
Unlike a standard rideshare or taxi, post-procedure transport is provided by trained drivers who understand that patients may be groggy, unsteady, or require physical assistance after their procedure. The service is designed to be calm, patient, and fully supportive from the moment you exit the facility to the moment you're safely inside your home.
When Is Post-Procedure Transportation Needed?
Post-procedure transportation is appropriate after any appointment where:
• Anesthesia or sedation was administered - even mild sedation from a colonoscopy or dental procedure
• Pain medication was given that impairs driving ability
• The patient has mobility restrictions following the procedure
• The physician or facility has instructed the patient not to drive
• The patient is being discharged from a same-day surgery center or outpatient facility
Common procedures that require post-procedure transportation include:
• Colonoscopies and endoscopies
• Outpatient surgeries (knee, hip, eye, hernia, etc.)
• Dental procedures involving sedation
• Cardiac procedures such as cardioversions or catheterizations
• Chemotherapy and infusion therapy appointments
• Any procedure where the patient receives IV sedation or general anesthesia
Why You Cannot Use a Rideshare After Sedation
Many patients assume they can simply call an Uber or Lyft after a procedure. Most medical facilities will not allow this for procedures involving sedation.
Here's why:
• Rideshare drivers are not trained to assist medically compromised passengers
• Rideshare platforms do not verify driver medical transport training
• If a complication arises during transport, a rideshare driver is not equipped to respond
• Many facilities require a named responsible adult - not a rideshare driver - to accompany the patient
Post-procedure NEMT fills this gap with a trained driver who can provide appropriate physical assistance and who understands the unique needs of a patient in recovery.
Planning Your Post-Procedure Transportation
The best time to arrange post-procedure transportation is before your appointment - ideally when you schedule the procedure itself.
Here's how to plan:
• Confirm with your facility what their requirements are for discharge transportation
• Contact Skyline Transport or your insurance broker to schedule your return trip
• Provide your procedure date, facility name and address, and estimated discharge window
• Give the facility a phone number to contact Skyline Transport directly when you are ready for discharge
Understanding Will-Call Returns
Post-procedure discharge times are unpredictable. Procedures run long, recovery takes longer than expected, and facilities rarely release patients on a fixed schedule.
For this reason, many post-procedure return trips are scheduled as a will-call return - meaning your ride is arranged in advance, but the exact pickup time is confirmed once your facility notifies us you are ready to be discharged.
Here's how will-call returns work with Skyline Transport:
• When scheduling, provide your procedure date, facility name and address, and your best estimate of the discharge window
• When you are ready to be discharged, have the facility or a family member contact Skyline Transport directly to request your return trip
• We will dispatch your driver based on availability at that time
• Please note that Skyline Transport does not wait at the facility during your procedure - your return trip is dispatched when you call, not held on standby
Important - After-Hours Policy: Skyline Transport's standard operating hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Will-call return trips that fall outside of those hours may be subject to additional fees. If your procedure is scheduled later in the day and discharge is likely to occur after 6:00 PM, please discuss this when booking so we can advise on availability and any applicable after-hours rates.
