Not everyone who needs help getting to a medical appointment uses a wheelchair or requires specialized equipment. Many people - particularly older adults, individuals recovering from illness or injury, and those managing chronic conditions - can walk but still find it difficult or unsafe to navigate transportation independently.
That's where ambulatory NEMT comes in. It's one of the most commonly used forms of medical transportation, and it's more accessible than many people realize.
Ambulatory Transportation Defined
Ambulatory transportation is non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) for individuals who are able to walk, either independently or with minimal assistance such as a cane or walker, but who still require door-to-door support to get to and from their medical appointments safely.
Standard vehicles are typically used for ambulatory transport, though depending on availability and client needs, we may also utilize our accessible van with a lift to ensure safe and comfortable boarding. The focus is on reliability, safety, and the personal assistance of a trained driver who helps the client from their door to the vehicle and from the vehicle to their appointment entrance.
Who Uses Ambulatory Transportation?
Ambulatory NEMT is appropriate for:
• Seniors who no longer drive but can walk independently or with a cane or walker
• Individuals recovering from surgery or illness who are cleared to walk but are not yet driving
• Patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or COPD who need regular appointments but cannot drive
• Individuals with visual impairments who need assistance navigating to and from vehicles
• Patients managing mental health conditions who may have difficulty with independent travel
• Anyone whose physician has documented a need for assistance with medical transportation
If a person can walk but would struggle or be at risk navigating transportation alone, ambulatory NEMT is likely the right fit.
Ambulatory vs. Wheelchair Transportation: How to Choose
The primary distinction is whether the client requires a wheelchair or can walk:
• Ambulatory transport is appropriate when the client can walk and safely transfer into a standard vehicle seat
• Wheelchair transport is needed when the client uses a wheelchair and cannot transfer to a standard seat
If you are unsure which service is appropriate, contact Skyline Transport and describe the client's mobility level. We can help determine the right service type for your specific situation.
