If you or someone you care for has trouble getting to medical appointments, there is good news. Many health plans include a benefit that helps cover rides to and from care. It is called non-emergency medical transportation, or NEMT, and a lot of people who qualify for it do not realize it is available.
This guide breaks down how the coverage works, what a transportation broker is, and how to request Skyline Transport as your preferred provider.
What is non-emergency medical transportation
NEMT is scheduled, non-emergency transportation to medical care for people who cannot safely use regular transportation on their own. That includes riders who use a wheelchair, need stretcher transport, or are recovering after a procedure. It is not an ambulance and it is not for emergencies. It is a planned ride to keep appointments like dialysis, wound care, physical therapy, specialist visits, and hospital discharges.
How coverage usually works
Coverage depends on your specific plan, so the details below are a general guide. Please confirm your benefits with your plan before you book.
Many Medicaid and managed-care plans include NEMT as a covered benefit. If you have Medicaid or a managed-care plan in Florida, there is a strong chance transportation to covered medical services is part of your plan at little or no cost to you. Some Medicare Advantage plans also include a limited transportation benefit. Traditional Medicare generally does not cover routine non-emergency rides.
The fastest way to know for sure is to call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask if your plan includes non-emergency medical transportation.
What is a transportation broker and why does it matter
Here is the part that confuses most people. With many plans, you do not book the ride directly with the transportation company. Instead, the health plan uses a third-party transportation broker to manage rides. The broker takes the request, confirms eligibility, and assigns a provider to complete the trip.
Skyline Transport works within these broker networks, including Alivi Health. This is important, because it means you can often ask for the provider you want rather than accepting whoever is assigned.
How to request Skyline as your preferred provider
When your ride is managed through the Alivi Health broker system, Skyline Transport is registered under the name NDI Health Services. To request us, ask for NDI Health Services as your preferred provider when you schedule.
Preferred provider routing means your trip request comes to us first, and we take it whenever our schedule can accommodate it. That gives you a better shot at the same trusted team, the right equipment, and dependable pickups.
To verify your benefits, always call the member services number on the back of your insurance card. We are not able to check your coverage for you.
What to have ready when you book
To make scheduling smooth, have this information on hand:
Your insurance or Medicaid ID number
The pickup address and the appointment address
The date and time of your appointment
The type of transport you need, such as wheelchair, stretcher or stair chair
Any special needs, such as oxygen or a companion riding along
