Bringing a Companion on a Wheelchair or Stretcher Trip

When a loved one needs wheelchair or stretcher transportation, families often have one immediate question: can someone ride along? The answer is yes. Skyline Transport allows one companion to ride along on both wheelchair and stretcher transports — and we encourage it when it makes sense for the passenger.

Why Having a Companion Makes a Difference

For many passengers, having a familiar face nearby during transport makes a meaningful difference. Medical appointments, facility transfers, and discharge rides can be stressful — especially for older adults, patients with cognitive conditions like dementia, or anyone who is anxious about the journey.

A companion can help with:

  • Providing comfort and reassurance during the ride

  • Assisting with check-in or paperwork at the destination

  • Communicating with medical staff on behalf of the passenger

  • Carrying personal items, medications, or medical equipment

  • Simply being present so the passenger doesn't travel alone

How It Works on Wheelchair Trips

On wheelchair transport rides, the passenger remains securely in their wheelchair throughout the trip. Our vehicle includes a designated seat for one companion located near the passenger — not separated in a front cab. This allows the companion to stay close and provide support during the ride.

The companion should be able to board and exit the vehicle independently. If the companion also has mobility needs, please mention this when booking so we can confirm the right vehicle.

How It Works on Stretcher Trips

On stretcher transport rides, the patient lies flat on the stretcher and is secured for safety. One companion may ride along and will be seated inside the vehicle near the patient throughout the transport. This setup is particularly helpful for patients with dementia, those who are anxious, or anyone who benefits from having a family member present during the transfer.

Do I Need to Mention the Companion When Booking?

Yes — please let us know when you book that a companion will be riding along. This helps us assign the right vehicle and ensure there is a properly positioned seat available. If you forget to mention it when booking, call us as soon as possible before the pickup time and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Companion Rides

What If There Are Two Companions?

Currently, Skyline Transport accommodates one companion per trip. If additional family members need to travel to the same destination, they would need to arrange separate transportation. If your situation requires something different, call us and we'll discuss what options may be available.

What If the Companion Also Uses a Wheelchair?

If the companion also uses a wheelchair or has mobility needs, please mention this at the time of booking. We have vehicles that can accommodate two mobility devices simultaneously, so traveling together may still be possible depending on availability.
